November thoughts...

I have been thinking about tomorrow being the first day of November and the clocks have gone back so it is absolutely pitched dark now and it's only 6pm. I was reading an article on photography this week and it was saying how black and white lends itself perfectly to the autumn days because instead of the harsh direct summer sunshine the autumn light is soft and uniform so black and white is perfect for this light. Tomorrow I am starting a month of black and white pictures, does anyone else want to join me?

I thought I would post a last colour photograph I took today for October!

The Sunday Creative (October 31-6 November)

Maegan over at Madeline Bea is having a break and has asked me to host her wonderful Sunday Creative for the next few weeks (thank you so much Maegan). I am so excited as I always look forward to these Sunday challenges, so do please join in.

Welcome to The Sunday Creative! In this space, each week, on Sunday, I will offer a creative prompt; just one word that you can use as kindle for your creative fire in a project which I hope you'll consider sharing here!
You can use the word in it's literal or figurative sense...do not be bound by traditional implications or definitions of the word...but also don't feel like you have to have some broad and deep interpretation...just go with where you feel the prompt leading you. Your work can be in absolutely any medium!
It is my hope that through these weekly creative prompts that we can all continue to foster creativity, stretch our creative muscles, and grow in our collective creative community!
You will find the week's prompt every week here on Sundays. You can link to your project any time throughout the week. I ask that you only link up once, that you visit and support the other participants, and that this space remains nothing but positive and encouraging of everyone's creativity!
Please link back here and spread the word!

Please link to the exact post or image that correlates with your Sunday Creative submission. Also, if there is no mention of The Sunday Creative and the prompt in your post, your link will be deleted. Part of the fun of having weekly prompts is the community and sharing; please visit some of the other submissions and leave them some love!

Macro Friday

It's macro friday again at Blogging from Bolivia and I thought I would post a picture of this wonderful cow I took a picture of yesterday. He reminds me of my teenager and his friends, just that messy hair over the eyes look, you just want to give them a hug, a wash, and a brush, but of course you can't! My son was of course very unimpressed when I showed him the likeness...Do check out other entries.

Bulbs

I went into my very messy garden shed this morning and I noticed that last years' hyacinth bulbs are already putting up lovely green shoots so I need to repot them all and then I will have a wonderful indoor display in time for Christmas.

Black and White Wednesday

It's black and white Wednesday today a The Long Road to China. I was thinking about the French today. I love their sense of style, their food, architecture, and the fact that the women look so effortlessly chic. I took this picture when I went to Paris a couple of months ago, this man was surrounded by hassled tourists yet remained so calm and relaxed. Do check out other entries.

Autumn colours

Today we had to find autumn colours for picture fall. The sunlight was absolutely beautiful on my japanese maple first this this morning.

Sunday Creative

It's the Sunday creative today at Madeline Bea's and the theme today is Dynamic. I went for a walk this morning with the dogs and the blue sky was to me so dynamic and forceful. Do check out other entries.

Repetition

The theme for picture fall today is repetition. I always think that repetition is best seen in nature, the agapanthus are long gone but the stems are all of an identical shape and length.

Macro friday

My husband is Australian and spends the summer wearing this drover's hat, I think he likes to pretend he is rounding sheep up in the outback. It has now been put away and the winter one will come out as for him, summer is definitely over. It's macro friday at Blogging for Bolivia today, do check out other entries.

Black and White Wednesday

Over at the Long Road to China it is black and white wednesday and today is also the theme of connections at picture fall. My cat Ling Ling is a stray we adopted when we lived in Hong Kong, I am sure she is reincarnated and was once an Empress from the Ming Dynasty who drank jade and grew her fingernails to extraordinary lengths - I digress - Mintie is my black labrador and they have a love hate relationship which I tried to capture this morning. Straight after this shot ling ling took a swipe!

The creative exchange.

Lisa at White Cotton Tee has a fabulous blog and each week she has a creative exchange and I thought I would participate with a very useful tip for backgrounds. I normally use a window and natural light when I am photographing but occasionally for a dramatic effect I will use black velvet as it is the most wonderful absorber of light so doesn't give shadows. I use a really old black velvet evening coat and drape it over a chair or a pile of books for height, any piece of velvet will do.  Do check out other creative exchanges.

Happy Birthday Harry xxx

My son Harry is 17 today, he sometimes looks at my blog so I thought I would post a picture of him. He will get cross if I get sentimental so I won't, but he did let me give him a birthday hug today which was great.

Backgammon

Today is cold and wet here in England so I thought I would set up the backgammon board incase anyone decided to play, no one did so I decided to photograph it instead! Hope you are enjoying your Sunday.

Juxtaposition

Today for Tracey Clarke's picture fall we had to shoot something that contradicts itself, a scene that brings more than one feeling to the shot. I chose to photograph the mushrooms on my lawn as there was an article in the paper today on just how dangerous they are as at this time of year when people forage and cook them with often fatal results. When I look at the mushrooms I see beauty and think of toadstools and fairytales and when they sit alongside grass with early morning dew they look so perfect to touch, soft and pretty but of course they are far from that. What shot will you take today that contradicts?

Macro friday

My clematis flowers are clinging on to the bitter end, growing old very gracefully. I think they look like masses of spider's legs. Do check out other posts over at the wonderful blogging from Bolivia.

A tiny splash of colour.

Today is very grey but there is a little colour protest going on in my garden.

Setting the table.

I love the idea of having people over for dinner, I love planning the menu and then I love setting the table during the day. I put out the best china and glasses, pick flowers from the garden and then I wonder if everyone will have a good time, will they enjoy the food? will they all get on? will they laugh? the anticipation lasts until the doorbell rings.

The sunday Creative

The theme for the Sunday creative at Madeline Bea's is Spiral - I really found this prompt hard, I do worry sometimes about my lack of imagination. Do check out the much more imaginative entries this week.

Preparation

Today for Tracey Clarke's 'picture fall' class we had to focus on something in the kitchen that brings you joy. I generally see cooking everyday meals as a chore but I always get excited in the preparation of cooking something new. I love standing my ingredients in an orderly line before I weigh them, gently sifting the flour whilst I tap the side of the sieve and I love mixing everything together, I find it very therapeutic. What brings you joy in the kitchen?

In the garden

I am struggling with the gloomy grey light at the moment and I was thinking about how to continue doing my 365 project during the winter but once I got out in the garden this morning I realised there is still so much out there to photograph. I picked this hydrangea which actually was white in the height of summer and now it is just as beautiful and will continue to change colour over the coming weeks so all is not lost.

Macro Friday

Wow these weeks are going quickly, Friday seems to come around so fast and mince pies are in the supermarket so Christmas is just around the corner. It's macro friday again at Blogging for Bolivia. This is a lovely silver trinket my mother gave me, I love the pattern of the basket weave on it.

After the fall

The apple picking has just finished here, the ground is covered with those that they missed.

Autumn

I keep coming back to these poppy seed heads, they remain stoic and upright in my garden when the wind is howling and the rain is pelting down. I just had to take another photograph of them today. I have been shaking the seeds out over the garden in the hope they will seed and my garden will be full of them next year, we shall see. It's black and white wednesday over at the Long Road to China, do have a look or join!

Little reminders

I am participating in Tracey Clarke's Picture fall course and today we had to take a picture of certain words we need to hear. I have had this little card lying around the house for ages and I always forget to look at it or take any notice of it. I wish I could be more carefree, I will start tomorrow.....

The Sunday Creative

The theme this week is nostalgia over at Madeline Bea's fantastic blog. Whenever I travel I get nostalgic. As I stand in a long queue with my shoes in one hand and my teeny tiny see through bag in the other I long for the days of romantic travel. I think of steam trains and porters whistling as farewells are said and hankies are waved out of windows and then I know I have to watch Celia Johnson in A Brief Encounter again.

Scavenger hunt sunday

I love these prompts for scavenger hunt every week at Ashley's blog, do have a go. Here are my interpretations -
1.Golden
The autumn leaves look so beautiful at the moment, I keep picking big handfuls to photograph
2. Toast
Who can resist the smell of toast!
3. Fruit
The orchards around us are full of beautiful apples ripe for picking
4. Simple
It should be simple, a needle and thread and follow the pattern but why is it taking me so long to finish this tapestry?
5. Sports
My faithful running shoes.

A new adventure

Alice is my eldest child and she is off to University tomorrow, she is so excited but also a bit nervous. I am going to miss her so much. I know that she will have a great time on a wonderful new adventure but I will still find it tough walking into her empty room (which will now be very tidy!) and not having her around the house.
I wanted to take a picture of her hand today as even though she is off on this big adventure as a young woman, when I look at her hands I can still see so much of the child in her and I have looked, held, and touched these hands for the last 19 years and I will really miss them. Anyway, it's only a few weeks till Christmas when she will be home.

Macro Friday

It's macro friday again at Blogging from Bolivia and since it is the first day of October I thought I would make it an autumnal shot. The leaves are falling today and the wind is blowing, the chimney has been swept (yes, I touched the chimney sweep for good luck!) and I am going to light a fire soon, I am ready for autumn.
