Practice, practice, practice

I treated myself to the canon 24-70mm the other day as it had been on my wishlist for ages. Everyone always says how wonderful this lens is but I must confess I am struggling with it and wondered if anyone else felt the same. I do suffer from shutter shake but I know that I have to keep practicing and eventually it will come together, I remember when my son came home with his new tennis racquet and said 'it doesn't do backhands' so I could be in the same boat! Did anyone take a long while and lots of deleted photos to get it right?

I used it this morning to photograph the flowers I picked from the garden, when I zoom in when downloading to lightroom I just don't seem to get the clarity of my other lenses, any suggestions gratefully received.

  2. I am so confused about lens.. I would love to hear if it gets any better.. I just bought the canon 50mm 2.5 compact macro. and it took a little getting used to but I do love it.. I start a photography class in mid sept. I am hoping that will help a little..
But I do think these pictures look wonderful.
Like you said Practic, Practic, Practic.
Hope you have fun playing with you new lens.

  3. Justine - Practice is the only advice I can give. When I got my 105mm f/2.8 macro last year, I went crazy trying to get good (any!!) shots. It's gotten better with practice, but still have a way to go.

I think these shots are lovely!

  6. If you've been a prime girl, getting used to a zoom make take some practice. You won't get the clarity of a f/1.8 or f/1.4 (I don't know what you were working with). I find that on my Tamron 28-75 mm, that I really need to be at an f/3.2 to get a really clear shot so you may try dialing it up a little bit. I hope that helps.

  10. I love all your photos - and to my untrained eye - they are perfect! One day I'm going to get serious about photography and buy a good camera and some lenses. At the moment all I use is a Sony Cybershot on auto :-) ..I have a long way to go!
    Happy practicing!

  11. Can't really answer your question. I use a nikon d3000 with a 35mm lens most of the time. I do notice that my pictures arent as clear when I use my zoom lenses.

    Beautiful pictures btw.

  14. Sorry Justine. That lens is on my wish list too. You're right, pratice practice practice. I wish I was able to help more.

Your pics above came out good. Can't wait to see what your new lens captures. :)

  15. I only have a Canon 18-55mm, and a 50mm f/1.8 so I've never used a Canon 24-70mm. I think your pictures look great though.

I guess it's all about practice though. I still don't know how to use the majority of the settings on my camera!

    Good luck!

  18. Okay, may I tell you something that makes me blush a titch? You may know that I just got my canon 450d, this past June. Before that, I had a kodak point and shoot. The lovely thing had a little hand that was green, yellow or red, depending on how clear my shot was. Oh, how I miss that feature!!

I'm going nuts in the evening with the breeze coming off the hill, trying to take photos in the beautiful evening light (not tooooo fast of a shutter speed) while everything (including me) is swaying. My tripod is a whole other story which I am SURE that I will share about soon. Needless to say, I am struggling with blurry. But, then, I was trying to take a photo of a spider inside - with my tripod - and, when I tried to crop and zoom in - hardly any of them were clear! Why, oh, why? I know, though, that, sometimes, Canon has trouble with their lenses. I just wonder and wonder.....

On my serious wishlist (I am campaigning!) is a Canon 15-85mm zoom. I wish that I had someone to advise me.

Justine, I am soooo glad that you're signed up for the 365! May I come alongside and learn with you a little? I need a buddy!

    Love, Katy Noelle
