Resolutions?

I always find myself a bit out of sorts at this time of year, after Christmas and before New Year. I feel I should be making endless lists of life changing resolutions, go on a diet because from the weekend onwards every magazine and paper I open will tell me I should, and relieve in minute detail all the trials and tribulations of 2010 in the press.  I hate making resolutions as I feel such a failure when I last just a few days. I mulled all these things in my head this morning on a long walk with the dogs, came to absolutely no conclusions but saw these lovely horses on the way with their heavy winter coats, they were a lovely distraction. Does anyone have any answers? do you feel this way too??

  1. I don't think anyone ever keeps their resolutions. I don't make them. This picture is fabulous! I love it.

  2. Yes, I agree!! I have all the usual resolutions - lose weight, save money, get organized...and I always fail miserably. I tell myself THIS YEAR is going to be a new beginning, then I fall right back into the habits I've always had. I think this year my resolution will be to not make any resolutions. I'm going to take each day as it comes, improve what I can each day, and not beat myself up when, for that day, I don't improve anything.
I wish you a wonderful year filled with peace, happiness, health, and love!!

I love the details in the backs of the horses, nice!

  4. I never really make resolutions, but I do like the "start anew" feeling each January!

    Beautiful capture.

  5. You should do what I did, write down all things you have acheived! It is actually very satisfying and makes you aware of the richness of your life - I have three to start you off. 1. Am a fabulous wife and mother. 2. Am a talented photographer. 3. Am a wonderful friend! Keep going....

  6. I don't make resolutions. I do look back at what I've accomplished though, and I do set a goal or two for the New Year, and only realistic ones.

    Fantastic perspective in this photograph!

  7. Oh, I love this composition. I love the textures in the beautiful 'coats' and the DOF makes this such an interesting image!

I have similar thoughts at this time of the year. Most of us really want to improve ourselves, be better people, accomplish more, and then we feel we let ourselves down. I really like Simone's remarks. Another thing I really like is to keep a Gratitude Journal. It is simply writing down something on a daily basis that I am grateful for, sometimes big but often small things. Then I consciously try to think about and write down one thing I've done for someone else. And I don't beat myself up if I miss a day or two. I find that looking outward of myself helps my mood and I don't worry as much about what I should be doing. I wish you a glorious New Year with many wonderful photo ops for you to share with us!

  8. I have a feeling that you make resolutions every day on your walks! Mull things over, try to figure out how to make things work, worry about things and then "let them go" so to speak. And blog, of course! That is a resolution of sorts. A resolution to keep seeing the world around you, keep searching and learning. I think you are further along this road of "resolutions" than you think. :)

  9. Merry Christmas Justine. Beautiful shot with lovely textures and bokeh.

What an array of lovely thoughts and ideas your post has inspired. Keep mulling, walking and shooting through the lens and I'm sure you will find your true path through 2011.

Still contemplating the old and the new here - as usual I have mixed feelings about the cycle and feel a little in limbo.

  10. Ya know - I haven't made resolutions for years...I try to focus on a couple of goals but that's about it. Last year, I really focused on learning some photography technical skills...this year - although I need to lose a little bit of holiday weight, I just want to continue learning. I don't know...I guess I don't have the answers.

  11. I always feel I should be making some sort of major change to my life at new year, but I very rarely do. For 2011 I'm going to make a real commitment to improve my photography. I'm pretty sure I can keep to that resolution!

  12. I like picking a new word every year to focus on...but I agree resolutions are pointless.

  13. Wonderful image, Justine. Love the different perspective. I'm not a verbal goal maker, I keep it all in my head that way I don't feel like a fool if I fail but I don't usually as I make my goals attainable. This year it's to lose weight (by running another half marathon), simplify, and increase my photography skills. Simplify will be the most difficult. Happy New Year!

  14. I like what Lisa said. I think I already mentioned it to you, but I've decided to try something fun like learning to crochet! Not a huge blanket, but just those little small crocheted flowers. It's relaxing, and something that is not out of reach...no pressure. Happy New Year.

  15. wonderful shot Justine!!! Love that the full horse is in bokeh and the detail of the horses backs...very different, and works very well!!!

As for resolutions...resolve to live the best life you can, and you can't lose!!!

  16. beautiful shot, Justine!
I gave up resolutions a couple of years ago..and then last year I read about the Word of the Year concept on Christine Kane's blog - it's a great way of setting an intention and a framework for the year. Read about it here http://christinekane.com/blog/resolution-revolution-a-better-way-to-start-your-year/
I'm still undecided on my word for 2011!!

  17. I pick between one and three things that I want to change and give myself daily, weekly and monthly goals. This keeps me from going crazy and keeps my goals attainable and measurable. I have found that I can totally change three things. It is when I try and change everything that I become overwhelmed and lose focus. Love the pictures of the horses. You are amazing.

  18. I love, love, love your photo! I am in the same boat as you right now - today has been an especially funky day. My main goal this upcoming year is to focus on photography and LEARN as much as I can. Happy new year and good luck!

  20. I've been thinking about resolutions for weeks - want to make some that will stick this year.

  21. I don't tend to make resolutions, instead I have a list of 101 things I want to do before I turn 30, so I'm making my way through them instead of focusing on a few things at the beginning of the year:)
