Finding inspiration

I don't know about you but I really do struggle with what to make for dinner, I have so many cookbooks but most of the time nothing inspires me and I long for someone else to make a decision instead of just answering 'anything' when I ask them. This wonderful duck is the lid of a casserole dish that we were given as a wedding present twenty two years ago now! I like to look at him and photograph him but sadly he won't tell me anything either so I still don't know what to make for dinner tonight.

  2. I have just moved out (married - yay!) and am now in charge of dinners. It's weird to have to come home from work and think about what I'm going to make instead of wondering what's been made. Tonight I made simple chicken breasts with cucumber, tomato and hot butter corn. Mmm!

  3. I love collecting cookbooks, love looking through them but they end up being more like coffee table books that I flip through rather than actually cook from. When I'm really stuck I occasionally look at www.notakeout.com - it has a different recipe every day. Not always what I end up cooking, but a go-to if I'm really stuck. It's either that or tomato soup with toasted cheese sandwiches

  4. deciding what to make & shopping were the bane of my existence. Now after retiring hubby shops with me (or for me) and makes suggestions as to what he would like to eat--then helps me cook it. ah bliss. Still, if dinner would just cook itself...
Lovely photo (great duck! Congratulations on 22 years in!) and spot on sentiment.

  8. Hey, maybe we could all share a recipe....sounds like fun. We can make the dish and share our thoughts about it. I'll give you one if you'll give me one. I have a great and easy one called Potatoe Onion Bake. What do you say?

  12. I too have this problem. That is probably why we end up having the same thing every week LOL. Easy and less thinking involved.

  13. Cooking can get to be a tiresome task! When my kids were young, two friends and I decided to have a "dinner co-op", where we each cooked for the three families one night a week. We didn't eat together (too complicated) but we ended up with four great dinners (one was leftovers) and we only had to cook once! That lasted a couple of years. Wish we were still doing it. Your duck is so sweet.

  15. You put your time to better use - photos are better than dinner anytime.

  16. I never know what to fix. It is horrible. I wish someone would plan all my meals for me. Cool photo.

  17. What a beautiful photo (as per usual). For something made of china he is quite expressive.......obviously he is not going to suggest you have duck for dinner tho ! I have lots of cook books too, I love them, but I know what you mean about lack of inspiration. Sometimes I hop on the computer and look at some foodie sights and that helps. i.e. http://foodgawker.com/

  18. What a beautiful dish!
I think the fog and winter blues are getting to me. I have been cooking very easy and quick meals. I would rather be curled up with a blanket and a book. :)

  19. What a lovely lid - beautiful tones of your photo, and I love the light so much! I totally understand you - I also have stacks of cookbooks which doesn't help in my meal planning... My husband's answer however is "pasta" or "spaghetti" whenever I ask what he would like to have! :-)

  20. I am part of the "anything crew" also, and even though this little guy won't give you any hints, he sure is cute!
    Wonderful shot!

  21. Wonderful photo. When i get lost to what to fix, we most often have a breakfast meal for dinner.

  22. At least you're a great cook! I remember all your wonderful dinner parties. I just find it hard when I do cook and the children turn up their noses and I think. Why do I even bother!!!

  23. I just eat whatever my husband makes...yes, I am a lucky girl! Love the photo, what an interesting dish. :-)

  24. I hear ya! I usually only cook on the weekends, and my stepson is a very picky (i.e., boring!) eater - mashed potatos are a staple at our dinner table, and heaven forbid if I had a little garlic. So, during the week I've been indulging myself - making soup! It makes the house smell wonderful, and there are thousands of soup recipes out there. This week I made curry split pea - delish! Find your inspiration - because your tummy will love you for it!

  25. Very funny and I can so relate. I've had the same problem for almost 21 years. More than cooking though, I hate the cleaning up afterwards. ...and I love your little duck. He's so cute. And your lighting is so soft. Lovely

  26. After reading through the comments, I definitely don't feel so alone!! I use to use a service that sent me my recipes and meal plans for the whole week. I LOVED it!! Unfortunately, my picky eaters (kids AND husband) didn't like half of the recipes so it money-wise it wasn't worth it.

But more interestingly, your duck is just lovely! On our honeymoon to Spain, my husband and I picked up a basket that had a duck head. I used it for many years as a bread basket -- until our lab-mix puppy got a hold of it. ; )
