Experiments with film

I am having a great time experimenting with film again and using a really old Nikkormat that my mother had lying in the back of a cupboard for years after she had stopped using it. When she gave the camera to me she also gave me two rolls of expired film from 1999 so this is the result, grainy and underexposed but I like the rawness and grain of the shot and the fact it is in it's natural state, two, not three dimensional, not sharpened, textured or contrasted. I am enjoying the whole process of waiting, to take the shot, see if it will come out and waiting till I can go back to pick up the pictures. What about you? are you tempted to pick up a film camera again?

  1. Yes, instant that is. I would love to learn how to process my own film so I wouldn't have to wait...Lovely photo. :)

  4. Great image Justine.
I actually have a Kodak rangefinder from 1957 loaded with film.
Just waiting for the weather to cooperate.

  5. Oh this is so cool! Honestly...I have very little desire to pick up a film camera. It's expensive to process and I am too lazy to scan photos to put them on line. I am so pathetic!

  6. Oh this is truly beautiful ! A wonderful still life that 'wakes up' the imagination. You have to 'think' about this image, love the grainy moodiness of it. It's the start of a bigger story..love it. ! xx p.s. more please.

  7. The composition is wonderful and that's what matters first and foremost. I too like the grain.

I actually have some old film cameras that I've been tempted to pick up from time to time.

  8. You make me wish I hadn't given away all our pre-digital cameras. I had my own darkroom in the 70s and had great fun messing about with the chemicals. I do like being able to take as many shots as I want and not worry about the expense of film and developing, but there is something very special in the images taken with film. Lovely!

  9. I miss film, and my old cameras, and my darkroom sooooo much.
I had a Nikkormat, a Nikon F2, an over-and-under Rolleiflex (120)...then a Hasselblad, then some Leica M rangefinder cameras....and then the world changed to digital, overnight.
I regret getting rid of everything (and have been thinking of getting a film camera, 35mm, again -- cause I miss the gold ol' days. I still have a box full of exposed B+W film, Tri-X. I'll process the film, for sure. I hung on to my reels, tanks, etc.
There is definitely a place for film . . .

  11. Nice shot, I'm not really tempted to use film, I think I love the way it's so easy to take millions of photos & have an instant result. Now polaroid is tempting!

  14. Excellent shot Justine, love the texture here....regarding the ilford delta 3200 and FP4 that you asked on my blog...I'm sorry but I haven't used these films yet as they are not easily available in our part of the globe though I have a friend who does reviews on Films and you may check on his blog here http://constellationcafe.wordpress.com/the-film-pharmacist/

  16. One day I might.............one of my mentors still has a dark room and you should see the state of his hands from all the chemicals he uses in there! I've a slr with film in the cupboard though I've not used it since the early 90's - I wouldn't spend the money getting the photos from that film developed though as I think the film has been exposed to the light.

  17. I have to be honest. It scares me a little. Just so easy to delete all those bad shots I take. I do love your photo!

    Hugs, Linda

  18. I have a few film cameras, and my nephew shoots nothing but film and developes all his own shots. He has generously offered me some of his film and to develop them for me. But, I just feel like it's another skill set to learn, and I'm not ready to take the time to learn about it. But I have enjoyed watching my flickr peeps experiment with it. This is great, btw.
