black and white street shots

I have been doing more shooting with film. I read an article about using the Ilford delta 3200 film which is perfect for use in low light and gives off a lovely soft grainy 60's feel so I decided to give it a go even though my nikkormat only goes up to an ISO of 1600. I took these shots at dusk in London, low light, no flash. Have I persuaded any of you to try out film yet? it is a question of waiting, I sent the film off to ilford to be developed so it took a week but the waiting process is part of the fun and it isn't expensive.

  1. Great shots...I do love the soft grainy look, and oh how I love London. Don't know if I will get into film, still muddling my way with digital lol, and I'm not 'really' young ( I wish ) I'm older than you !! xx

  4. I love street scenes and you made excellent use of the leading lines and interest in the sidewalk.
I might be inclined to try film if I had a camera....(oh crap now I'm singing "if I had a hammer).....perhaps someone will just be getting rid of one and I'll get lucky. I think it might be good practice to be patient and compose the shots carefully. Digital is great, but the instant delete-well, I think film's skill level needs to be there more.
Hope you keep on keeping on. You're getting great results.

  6. Great - especially the first one. I remember the days of using film and the impatience whilst waiting to get the photos back. Have you anywhere you could use as a darkroom? I think that would make the use of film really worthwhile.

  8. You are getting to be a skilled street photographer! The images do have a wonderful retro look. I messed with film for years, and really can't imagine going back after using digital....but keeping an open mind.

  9. What fabulous shots. You have to be so happy with the effect you got with your film shot.. I don't even own a film camera anymore.. :(

My sister has a old canon that belong to my dad that use film. I should ask her if I can use it.

    Hugs, Linda

  11. These are beautiful! I do sometimes miss having an old film camera. But I do love the ease and speed of digital.

  12. Ah, Justine...grainy is so good. Yes, film is on my mind constantly. Especially shot with a medium format camera. Sadly, I'm still mostly digital (time poor is my lazy excuse). The hubby and I have plans to buy a super scanner for negs some time soon both to cut costs and upload images with a dash of speed. Keep the film shots coming, so enjoying your blog :)

  15. These are lovely. There's something about the tonal range and quality in film that can't be reproduced digitally.

  16. I need to get new batteries for my film camera so I can use the 2 rolls of tripanX that I have. You might be the right motivation. :)

  19. These are lovely, and I do appreciate the 60s quality...
    but, go back to film?
    No.
I spent a decade with film (even having a darkroom)
and I simply don't want to go back to the w.a.i.t.
    I received a digital point-and-shoot as a hand-me-down in 2006
    and I've never looked back.
    I'm hooked.
And I still use a point-and-shoot (after trying a DSLR for a week just last year).
There are limitations, but I've adapted my photography to it's strengths.
Do I love and appreciate photos taken with film?
    Absolutely.
    And your photos are wonderful.
