A 'gathering'

A couple of weekends ago I went to a Kinfolk 'gathering' at the Avalon sailing club here in Sydney. I had always wanted to go to a kinfolk 'thing' having seen and read so much about them. I didn't really know what to expect, I thought there might be lots of men with beards and people with interesting shoes and I thought we might weave something or sit around a campfire. I was of course very wrong and as the word suggested, it was a gathering of strangers for four hours with only a couple of beards and no craft in sight. I loved the setup, the location was so beautiful and the food was absolutely fantastic. Everything looked so pretty and cameras and iPhones worked non stop, instagram overload!  I spent rather too much time envying the guitar player in the corner who didn't have to talk to anyone as I have come to the conclusion I really am absolutely rubbish at small talk …..does anyone else have this problem or a solution perhaps??

  1. Hi Justine, beautiful photos, as always. I know what you mean about socialising in large groups and small talk...I can't do it. It is funny you bring this up. I just posted a quote a couple of days ago on my Facebook page that explains exactly this situation. I can not add the link here but if you 'google' me you should be able to see my FB home page. I think you were really brave to go along and that you could take away positives about the experience. xx

    And in Sydney no less.

  3. Hello again, just adding to my previous comment. Don't try to access my FB via google. Much easier to go via the little BF button on my side bar on my blog. Cheers. xx

  4. It really does look beautiful, so beautifully styled. And the weather & location look amazing. Shame there was no weaving :)
I wonder if Kinfolk do feedback?

  5. Looks wonderful. I would have joined you in a corner and we could have had a nice quiet time! All I know about Kinfolk is the magazine ( which I've never read)

  6. I'm not good with large gatherings or small talk either, but I don't see it as a problem. Other people like to talk, so I just listen and smile a lot! What strikes me about your images here is how few people are in them. A strange "gathering" indeed...but perfectly lovely for an introvert such as I am, and as I suspect you must be also.

  7. So excited you got to goo. My daughter and I tried to go to the one in Chicago, but it was sold-out before we made up our minds. I am definitely not a fan of small talk, always so uncomfortable.

  8. What a beautiful venue. Your photos are amazing. The only thing that helps me loosen up to talk is a glass of wine or a beer. Other wise I am pretty uncomfortable as well.

  9. Looks wonderful Justine and Sydney put on a lovely evening for it too... couldn't expect the same kind of reaction in Melbourne. I hate small talk too - I think everyone does, which is always good to remember as you're all probably feeling as silly and awkward as the next.
