The creative exchange.

Lisa at White Cotton Tee has a fabulous blog and each week she has a creative exchange and I thought I would participate with a very useful tip for backgrounds. I normally use a window and natural light when I am photographing but occasionally for a dramatic effect I will use black velvet as it is the most wonderful absorber of light so doesn't give shadows. I use a really old black velvet evening coat and drape it over a chair or a pile of books for height, any piece of velvet will do.  Do check out other creative exchanges.

  2. Just the sort of tip I need - I'm never sure about how to make a good background to photograph against and it's good to know I don't have to spend a fortune to try to get as wonderful an image as yours. Will be scouring the second-hand shops for black velvet tomorrow!

  3. Oh how beautiful - such a wonderful image! And thank you for the tip! Heehee, I feel like scouting for black velvet now too :)

I also really enjoyed your vivid description earlier of dim sum memories in Hong Kong, made me feel like I was right back there!

  4. Beautiful flowers. :)
I'm with you, I like using natural light too ...one of the best places for me to photograph for light being in the bathroom!

  5. This is fantastic Justine! I usually use a piece of black cotton, but there are times when, depending on the light, it gives me problems, so I cannot wait to try this. These flowers are lovely. Isn't it amazing how long the blooms last? Most of mine bloom in Dec./Jan. which is perfect because it is so gloomy here then.

Thank you so much for sharing this at The Creative Exchange!
