Planting hyacinths

Today Lisa is hosting the fabulous creative exchange and this morning I finally planted my hyacinths so I thought I would share how to do that with you as my creative exchange.

My bulbs have been lying around in the shed since last year and already they are sprouting little green shoots so I am a bit late with this but what I do is I find all the containers I can from around the house, anything will work - planters, pots, urns, tea cups, bowls, soup tureens - the list is endless and my favourite is the wooden wine boxes we get from the wine shop. I line the bigger containers with black plastic and then fill up with potting mix/bulb fibre.

I then plant my hyacinths or jonquils or daffodils and leave the tips just showing out of the soil. I then give them all a good water and leave in a cool dark place, water regularly, and move inside once the first shoots start showing. This should give you a wonderful house full of scents and colours for just before Christmas.

  1. Justine your black and white photos on your blog all together look so good. I am such a colour person but I love how an image totally lacking in colour some how makes you think more deeply about it, it gains a new 'dynamic'. Too much wah now. I think your bulbs are going to look amazing in a couple of weeks...... can'y wait to see them ( in colour ??? )

  2. I've always wondered how you force bulbs to come early. I think I'm too late for this year but will file it away in the back of my mind for next year.

  3. Justine - What a great post, and beautiful shots!
Question...how long do you let the bulbs regenerate before planting them? I'd heard a year, but when I tried to restart mine, non were successful.

Thank you so much for sharing this today at The Creative Exchange!

    Have a wonderful day.

  8. wow, I'm so glad you extrapolated on the photo you posted. This is great. I wish I had enough gardening discipline to plant bulbs, but by November, my green thumb is fried (well, I don't really have a green thumb). Can't wait to see them in the Spring.

    Have a lovely day!

  20. You've reminded me that I have some bulbs languishing in our garage which I really should check out! I love the idea of using the wine boxes and aren't spring bulbs at Christmas/new year just so wonderful - especially the heady, sweet scent of hyacinths.
